I had a fun time conceptualizing this cover and story intro photograph. The subject is a local artist and teacher Clayton Singleton. He put’s so much of himself and his life experiences and culture in his art that it gave me the idea to put him into his own painting. So, I worked with him and had him paint one of his backgrounds on a larger scale of 6×9 ft which photographer Adam Ewing photographed him against, doing different poses. I also ordered some magnetic butterflies off of Amazon and had Clayton paint on them so they looked like some of his butterflies that he uses sometimes. Adam photographed the butterflies on the same background and I married the two into a single image. Also for the cover shot, we painted in his hand to make it look like he was painting himself into the painting. It’s subtle, but it’s there as a nice surprise, kind of an easter egg.  Then I laid out the story and did the headline typography. A win, win.
